Social Media Etiquette: "Funding Secured" Elon Musk

Since the launch of Social Media it has been easy to post in the moment but that could follow you throughout your life. In 2018, Elon Musk posted on X that he was considering taking Tesla private at $420 per share and said funding was secured. That tweet affected the stock price and drew attention from investors and regulators. The issue was the funding was not fully confirmed, which led to an SEC investigation, a $20 million fine, and Musk stepping down as chairman for a period of time.



Social media etiquette is about responsibility, accuracy and awareness. After my experience in the Army working in structured environments, I have learned that communication has to be accurate and intentional. You do not put information out unless it is confirmed, especially when it can impact others. In this case, Musk shared unverified information, and because of his position, it had financial consequences.



This situation could have been avoided by following processes in place. Musk could have worked with Tesla’s legal and communications teams to confirm the information before sharing it. He could have used an official press release instead of posting on twitter. In roles where decisions affect a large group, communication should not be handled casually.


To fix the situation, Musk and Tesla reached a settlement with the SEC that included fines and added oversight on his social media use. He could also have publicly clarified the situation right away and taken accountability to rebuild trust with investors. These types of controls are often put in place after mistakes to prevent them from happening again.


There were better alternatives from the start. Musk could have waited until the funding was fully confirmed or communicated through official investor channels instead of twitter. Slowing down and following a structured process would have avoided most of the issues.


If I were in that situation, I would treat social media like an official communication channel. Anything that could impact people or a business should be verified before posting. If a mistake happened, I would address it, correct the information, and be transparent. Accountability and quick action are key to maintaining trust.


This situation shows how powerful social media is and how quickly things can escalate. Social media etiquette is not just about being respectful. It is about being responsible and understanding the impact your words can have.

Website Smackdown - Xfinity vs Armstrong

Hello Classmates,  I compared Xfinity and Armstrong because they both offer the same type of services, so it made sense to look at how their websites are built instead of what they sell. The main thing I paid attention to was how easy it is to move through the site, find information, and actually complete basic steps like checking availability or looking at plans. Using both, Xfinity was a lot easier. The layout is clearer, the navigation makes more sense, and you can get where you need to go without thinking too much about it. Armstrong’s site works, but it takes more time. You have to click around more and figure things out, and it’s not as clear where everything is, so it slows the process down. What this showed me is that even if two companies offer the same thing, the experience can feel completely different.
